Faring your canoe bottom is not difficult and can be done in a few hours with simple hand tools and under $50 in materials. Turbulence eats up energy and can slow your boat down. It has been known for some time that a 2-in. scratch on a smooth surface can generate turbulence for 10 to 12 inches as water flows over the scratch. If you have an older watercraft your bottom is probably not perfectly smooth any longer.
First, use a 100 grit sanding sponge or palm sander containing purple 3M-type paper to clean the bottom. Next, get out the glazing
Lake Lavon is a great place to go fishing. Catfish are good at the beginning of summer when spawning begins in the riprap near the dam. Fish for Striped bass all year in open areas or near the power plant. Try live or plastic shad, or your favorite surface bait.
Black Bass are active mostly in the spring when they spawn in shallow water. Try Carolina lizards in the 6 inch range and Texas worms and crankbaits. At the beginning of the cold months, try crawfish colored cranks or spinner baits in white.
The electric plant can attract fish in the cooler months when water temperature falls below the fish comfort level. This can be some good fishing near the dam. In the cooler months crappie are schooling on the south shore in deeper water structure. They go to shallow water in the spring and this makes for some good crappie angling. Try minnows and jigs for this species.

This is the time of year when Lake Erie walleyes are struck with wanderlust. For no apparent reason, these fish will pull up stakes, even when the waters are filled with forage, and literally disappear overnight.
Where did they go and why? It’s a puzzle that drives many fishermen crazy. Fortunately for me, I stopped fretting over this phenomena years ago. About the only thing the angler can do is top off the fuel tanks and start looking.
Back in the 1980’s, I and my angling brethern were faced with this same problem. On one particular mid-summer day, I ended up 25 miles from home and within spitting distance of the boundary with Canada. No walleyes to be found!
Instead of backtracking, I took a different route home, heading southeast where the water was 65 feet deep and somewhat cooler. Bingo! About nine miles north of Avon Point the fishfinder screen lit up with big fish. I got lucky and caught some eyes…16 miles from the dock.
But this is what fishermen are up against when they want a cooler full of fish and they aren’t finding them in the usual spots. I know gasoline costs are way up but it’s the only way, unless

Understanding the calico bass vision is key to developing key crappie fishing techniques to go bait fishing and catch crappie. This fact alone almost guarantees the crappies survival since zooplankton represents the smallest animal prey and they are abundant in all the calico bass habitat locations throughout the United States and Canada.
