It’s Arkansas White River!

This spot’s cold water is just right for rainbows and brown trout, and the best areas are in the tailwaters from Bull Shoals Dam in the middle of  the towns of Lakeview that are stacked with rainbows that do not seem to discriminate baits. You can place your bets on either 2-inch rainbows or even, two-pound brownies!

You can paddle across the water in search of your prize, but not near the near the dam’s turbines of course! It’s up to you to have the perseverance to find your best catch among the schools of trout and that makes it even more exciting and fun!

Ready to come in? You’d want the big ones, right? Well, who wouldn’t?  So, here are just a few tips.

Top Features to Look For in Fish Finders

By On September 2, 2010 No Comments

Lowrance introduced fish finders onto the market over fifty years ago. Since that time, fish finder technology has continued to improve. Today there is a wide variety of features to look for and choose between. Before you invest your hard-earned money in a fish finder, learn what is available, what you really need and what is worth paying extra for. Here are some features that are worth considering:

Frequency and PowerA fish finder is only as good as the fish that it can find for you. To determine the right frequency for your particular purposes, the rule of thumb is that higher frequency transducers show better detail at greater depth but cover a smaller area while lower frequency transducers cover a larger area and are good in shallow water.  Power is measured in watts. Higher wattage units are able to penetrate deeper waters and provide better results, but if you are on a budget and you primarily fish in shallow water, a modest power supply could be more than enough.

DisplayThere are two important considerations when choosing your fish finder’s display. The first is resolution. The higher the resolution, the better quality picture you will have and the more clearly you will

How to Fish Safely in Bear Country

By On September 2, 2010 No Comments

The following guidelines will help you travel and fish safely in bear country:Food StorageAll food, beverages, garbage, and any other odorous items must be attended at all times. They should be stored in a bear-resistant container (BRC, or “bear barrel”). Gear StorageKeep your belongings with you: A pack or clothing left unattended invites curious bears. Not only will your belongings likely be destroyed, but the bear may also learn to associate such items with interesting smells or, even worse, food.Be AlertBears are active both day and night and could be anywhere.Make NoiseIn dense stands of willow or alder and other conditions that hamper visibility, make lots of noise so bears can hear you approach. Bears may perceive you as a threat if you startle them. By making noise such as clapping, singing, or even talking loudly, you can alert a bear to your presence and it will likely choose to avoid you. Try to stay with a group when traveling in bear country. A group is noisier, easier for a bear to detect, and more intimidating than one person or two people.Avoid Close EncountersIf you see a bear that is unaware of your presence or far away, back away slowly

Using Inflatable Boats for Surviving

By On August 29, 2010 No Comments

No one who purchases an inflatable life raft really believes that they will actually have occasion to use the inflatable life raft for its intended purpose and it is true that the majority of inflatable life rafts live out the entirety of their lives in storage, never actually being used as a tool for surviving a disaster. This does not mean that no one ever has occasion to actually use a life raft, however. Many thousands of fishermen, travelers, sailors and pilots are only alive today because they had the foresight to purchase an inflatable life raft before embarking on their voyage into the skies or out to sea.

In the case of small airplanes and boats, especially those that journey into latitudes where the temperature is low enough for hypothermia to be a serious threat to survival in the event of a disaster where someone ends up in the water, one-person inflatable life rafts are probably the most apt tools for surviving in such a situation. The smallest inflatable boats typically weight under 10 pounds and, before you inflate them, are about the same size as a standard flotation cushion. Despite their light weight and small size, that package inflates
