Walleye Trolling Secrets

Trolling is excellent for catching walleye in deeper waters. That’s why it’s especially good to fish for walleye by trolling during the day. During the day, walleye swim fairly deep. At night, though, they sometimes head for shallower waters.

Of course, trolling allows you to scan a lot of water so you can find where the fish are on the day you’re out on the water.

You can troll for walleye a couple of different ways. You might try using a crankbait. If that doesn’t appeal to you, try baiting your line with a minnow or a worm and bottom bouncing, instead.

Another bait you could try is a floating stickbait. You may have to try a few different techniques, before you find one that works. A lot depends on where you are fishing for walleye and what you like to fish with.

Even though walleye sometimes go shallower at night, depending on where you’re fishing, night trolling can still be great for catching walleye. The trick to trolling for walleye at night is to look for areas where deep water meets shallow water.

That’s because they like to go deep during the day, but have easy access to shallow areas at night.

Walleye love to hang out on sandbars, points, shoals and break lines, for example.

Remember, walleye love cover. Any areas that have places to hide attract them. They enjoy being in places with weeds or rocks. It helps them to hide and ambush their prey.

So, if you find the weeds, you should find some walleye! Especially in water that’s between two and twenty feet deep. That’s the depth that walleye usually hang out at.
